Webinar – Saving Lives & Livelihoods: The role of WASH and Equity in AMR Response

Co-hosted by WaterAid UK and the Global Strategy Lab, this webinar will bring together experts for a moderated panel on the interconnections between antimicrobial resistance (AMR), water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and gender equity, within the context of both public health and livestock systems. Our moderator for this event is Dr. Masika Sophie.

This event marks one year since the Bellagio convening where the 1-10-100 unifying goals were proposed, underscoring the need for an intersectional and equity-based AMR response.

Panelists include Ms Angela Nguku, founder and lead of White Ribbon Alliance Kenya, Dr. Om Prasad Gautam, Hygiene Lead at WaterAid UK and Dr. Fiona Emdin, Research Fellow with the AMR Policy Accelerator at the Global Strategy Lab. Please see their bios below.

Dr. Masika Sophie is a highly accomplished Veterinarian with a Masters in Epidemiology and Economics. Her professional focus has been to demonstrate the value of One Health in system strengthening to tackle complex health policy challenges. She is currently the Global Health Policy Manager at the World Federation for Animals where leads policy and strategy development on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPR) and is the liaison lead to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) on the nexus of the triple planetary crises and health. 

Angela Nguku, founder and lead of White Ribbon Alliance Kenya and co-chair of the global movement, is a thought leader and passionate advocate for Reproductive, Maternal, and Newborn Health (RMNH). She played a pivotal role in the What Women Want campaign, championing the ASK-LISTEN-ACT approach to ensure health programs reflect the self-articulated needs of women, girls, newborns, and midwives in under-resourced regions. With influence on global advisory boards and technical committees, Angela drives policy change and advances equitable RMNH and gender rights worldwide.

Dr. Om Prasad Gautam is a behaviour change scientist, public health and WASH expert with more than 23 years of work and research experiences in Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), health, behaviour change, child health, immunization, food safety, diseases surveillance and HIV/AIDS programme. As the Hygiene Lead at WaterAid UK, he leds WaterAid’s global hygiene behaivour change portfolio across Asia and Africa. Dr Om holds PhD from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK and Two Master’s Degrees, one in Public Health from Bangladesh and another in Social Sciences from Nepal.

Dr Fiona Emdin champions global AMR policy research at the Global Strategy Lab bolstering the Accelerator’s program of work. She is a practicing veterinarian with extraordinary experience in infectious disease surveillance, contributing to the development of evidence-informed policymaking within the One Health space. Fiona has held positions with Veterinarians Without Borders in Kenya, WorldFish in Cambodia, and livestock and virology research groups in Australia.
