‘Leaving no one behind in AMR research, policy and practice: Integrating gender and equity in AMR One Health Solutions’ Workshop in Bangkok

This past week, Suzanne Garkay Naro and Fiona Emdin represented the Global Strategy Lab at the ‘Leaving no one behind in AMR research, policy and practice: Integrating gender and equity in AMR One Health Solutions’ workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Key Reflections & Workshop Highlights

The workshop involved a collaborative effort by the FAO of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP) and the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS). Approximately 100 participants from government, academia, and civil society convened to discuss how to better improve implementation of equitable and gender-sensitive AMR approaches in future research, programs, and policies.

GSL’s participation contributed to these conversations by sharing our research examining how gender and social inequities shape people’s exposure to and experiences with antimicrobial resistance. Suzanne presented findings from the recent publication “The Role of Gender in Antimicrobial Resistance: Findings from a Global Scoping Review ,” part of GSL’s collaboration with the World Health Organization to develop 20 evidence-informed recommendations for gender-responsive AMR action plans. She also delivered a presentation on “Developing Gender and Equity Research and Policy: Lessons from the Global Scoping Review and WHO’s Guidance on Gender for Agri-Food Systems,” which highlighted how lessons from the human health system can be applied to strengthen gender and equity considerations in agri-food systems. Fiona highlighted insights from the GSL AMR Policy Accelerator’s partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) to develop a conceptual framework and research questions that support greater gender inclusivity in AMR research within livestock systems.

Gratitude for Global Partnerships

We are deeply grateful to FAO RAP and ICARS for organizing such an inspiring event. The insights and relationships forged in Bangkok will continue to inform GSL’s efforts to support inclusive, evidence-based, and multidisciplinary AMR strategies.
