April 16th-18th, 2025, the AMR Policy Accelerator, in collaboration with the government of Malawi, convened a Smart Choice Process workshop in Salima, Malawi, marking an important milestone in Malawi’s action against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The workshop brought together over 32 One Health experts across human, animal, and environmental health sectors to shape the operationalization of Malawi’s 2025-2030 National Action Plan (NAP).
The Smart Choice Process is a systematic, evidence-informed methodology that supports countries in identifying and prioritizing interventions for their AMR NAP. By integrating evidence-informed approaches with inclusive, multisectoral dialogue, the process ensures that intervention decisions are not only grounded in evidence but also tailored to each country’s unique context and reflective of the perspectives across the One Health spectrum—including human, animal, and environmental health.
Throughout the three-day workshop, Senior Policy Lead, Dr. Kadia Petricca, along with Policy Advisor II, Suzanne Naro, and Policy Advisor, Heba Qazilbash, worked collaboratively with representatives from the Government of Malawi and national experts across sectors. Together, they conducted a thorough review of Malawi’s NAP, identified priority interventions, and explored the challenges and opportunities for successful implementation. The workshop served as a platform for diverse, cross-sectoral dialogue, surfacing valuable insights and highlighting the complexities of turning policy into action.
This collaborative environment demonstrated the importance of bridging institutional silos and building meaningful partnerships across sectors. With strengthened coordination and renewed momentum, stakeholders in Malawi are now well-positioned to drive forward the sustainable implementation of the 2025–2030 NAP, advancing the country’s efforts to address AMR through a One Health approach.
